Dr Muhammad was born in Kaduna and attended both primary and secondary school in Kaduna. She completed secondary school in 1978 at the Federal Government College, Malali Kaduna and proceeded to the School of Basic studies Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in the same year. She graduated with a DVM degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, a Master degree from the University of London and a PhD in Poultry Medicine from the University of Maiduguri. She has a post-graduate diploma in Agricultural Education from the Wolverhampton Polytechnic, UK. She is also a Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons, Nigeria.
She has over 33 years of working experience as a Veterinary Research Officer and has held various research and teaching positions and as an administrator at the National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom. Dr Muhammad has extensive experience in teaching, research management and administration. She is currently the Director/Chief Executive of the Institute.
Dr Muhammad began her career following the one year of national youth service at NVRI in 1985. She was employed as a research staff where she participated in diagnostic activities for the Rinderpest eradication programme. She was later posted to the College of Animal Health and Production where she was a member of the academic board and a full time teaching staff for twelve years. Dr Muhammad led the reorganization of the college curriculum and streamlining of courses in line with National Board for Technical Education requirements. She was course coordinator of the National Diploma programme and developed and organised short courses in rabbit, beef and poultry production. In 1996 she was posted to one of the Institute’s farms where she supervised the development of a data-base of various feed formulations for 21 classes of feed, incorporated the analysis of local feed materials into feed formulations, increased the revenue base of the Institute by increasing the production and sales of kerosene incubators and reappraised the breeding programme of rabbits in order to reduce in-breeding and increase hybrid vigour. In 2001, Dr Muhammad was posted to the Bacterial Research Division of the Institute where she led a national survey of Salmonella and risk factors in commercial poultry. She was also responsible for coordinating research and diagnostic activities of the Bacteriology and Parasitology Research Divisions.
Her research interests include the molecular epidemiology of Salmonella in poultry, public health and environment and development. Dr Muhammad has attended trainings and fellowships in diagnostic laboratory management, molecular and serotyping techniques for Salmonella and Campylobacter. She is an award recipient of the British Overseas Development technical trainers award, the Chevening Scholarship award and the Rockefeller Foundation award for Leadership in Environment and Development. She is a Fellow of the Leadership for Environment and Development Programme; a global network of professionals working towards a sustainable environment. Dr Muhammad has forty five published articles, two training manuals and has supervised seventeen ND, HND and PhD student projects.
