AMR laboratory renovation hand-over meeting
The fight against the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has received a boost from the intervention of the Fleming Fund, UK with the provision of grants to strengthen surveillance and diagnostic capacities of laboratories in benefiting countries. The Director/Chief Executive NVRI Vom, Dr. Maryam Muhammad expressed optimism towards the future of research in the Institute and the country at large when she received the country grantee, Development Alternatives Initiative (DAI) and consortium partners along with their consultants who were in NVRI for the AMR laboratory renovation hand-over meeting. Members of the institute’s Internal Management Committee (IMC) as well as the AMR working group were present.
Dr. Muhammad said that the NVRI is particularly pleased to host the animal health sector’s AMR National Reference Laboratory (NRL) and one of the sentinel laboratories. She also said partnering with organizations such as DAI could bridge the gap in upgrade of infrastructure for research in the country and hopes that such collaborations are sustained.
The Director/Chief Executive while taking the DAI team round the laboratories appreciated the timeliness of this intervention from the Fleming Fund and was confident that with improved facilities, researchers in the Institute would be reinvigorated to conduct research that would benefit the country and the world. She studied the diagrams and advised where necessary on some of the areas to be remodelled. At the end of the tour, she advised the contractor to complete the project on time and also maintain high standards on materials to be used for the work as the Institute aims to conform to GLP standards.
The DAI representative Pharmacist Blessing Stephen and the contractor, Arc. Abdullahi Sada and his team assured the Institute management on the quality of renovation work they intend to execute in the laboratories and will work within the proposed timelines.
